Weights and measures

Author: Manon Chabert

To begin with, commerce and trade with other countries of the world is essential in the modern global economy. All this is possible thanks to the mathematics for the construction of ships, or making fair transactions for example.

Moreover to manage to make equitable exchanges the weight and the measure were very important. At the time each region had its own measure. What was not practical, in effect the merchants had to be able to compare the foreign weights to the British ones.

This is why the cabinet of foreign weights was very useful. It was located in london more precisely at the Royal Mint in 1818. Each drawer contains standard weights according to where it comes from, you can read on the drawer the place of origin of the weights. Another problem was added to this one, depending on what you wanted to buy, the measures were different, whether for drugs, for example, it will not be the same as for commercial goods. After that the merchants could identify the weights correctly with the conversion

An advance made thanks to Queen Elizabeth I between 1588 and 1601 who established standard measurements for volume, weight and length. This allows English merchants to share the same measurements.
Indeed this has allowed an increase in trade and therefore increase the economy of the country.
